  • * Mt. Langley 14,026'. June 22 & 23-2002 Solo. Left Cottonwood/Trail passes trailhead 6pm with 16 lb. pack . Hiked in to Chicken Springs Lake over Cottonwood Pass by 8 pm Friday night. Poor sleep that night. Saturday, went NW on PCT then north on connector to Cottonwood Lakes Trail, east to 11,300', leave trail and go NE along stream on moderate to steep class 2 terrain. For a class 1 approach, take the trail a little longer before turning north. Got water at about 12,300' near stream source (melting snowbank). Then went up a ways NE and then left, NW, to go left around a small knob, to a point (ESTIMATED after the fact) about 13350', ~1/2 mile SSW (~207 degrees true) from the summit to ascend a steep sandy slope. This is probably the only class 1 route - it is west of the way most people go, and adds about 1/2 mile, but you really could do it with your hands in your pockets. Summit at 1pm - lots of people there. Camped about 150 yards SE from peak in 3'-4' deep rock walled sandy bottomed trench - very cozy (same place as Labor Day 1981). Saw sunset - love that pointed peak shadow. A cute little pika came out to hunt for leftovers at sunset. Got a much better night's sleep at 14,000' than at 11,250'. Cold night. Sunday, slept through the sunrise. Left about 7:45 intending to go back down the class 1 route, but the more direct class 2-3 route was too tempting and seemed a lot quicker and easier. Down New Army Pass. Got to trailhead at 12:16. Drove home.
1981 Labor Day with Markle via northwest Cottonwood lakes (steep class 2 chute 1-2 kilometers north of old army pass, "Winter Route" ?) and southeast ridge - class 3. Fritz joined us later after coming up the normal route. We 3 spent the night on top after climbing in one day from trail head. Hiked outthe next day.
1979 with Paul, middle south slope from old Army Pass, class 2-3. Camped on summit. Descended to the west and southwest, down steep talus to Rock Creek just north and west of The Major General.
  • *** Mt. Whitney 14,495' ~ '68 with Mark, '70 with Fritz (night on top), 1979 with Paul via Arc pass from Langley, 1980 solo after losing Fritz and Markle while bushwacking at night, via North Fork Lone Pine Creek, Whitney-Russel pass and north slope (night on top).
  • ***Mt. Williamson 14,375' , ~ 1982 w Fritz July 4. about 4 nights on the trail. Up from Owens Valley via Shepherd Pass (12,050'), and base camp between Williamson and Tyndall on 3rd night. Met some guys on the peak we had met on Mt. Langley previous labor day.
  • ***Olancha Pk. 12,123' . July 4 1976 with Fritz, John, and John's Friends. From Owens Valley and pass to the south - saw PCT under construction and hike up it by mistake, which turned out to be good, but we went past a cache of explosives (?) at the end of the finished trail and hiked along a bunch of wooden stakes marking the planned but unconstructed route. Camped at about 11,000' well above the water which lessened the mosquito attacks
  • ** Mt. Sill 14,153'
July 7, 2002 with Fritz (and Mike almost made it) via Bishop Pass, Knapsack Pass, camped in Palisade Basin (July 6) and Glacier Creek basin above lake 11,672 (July 7). Hiked out Cirque Pass and tried to exit Southfork Pass July 8, but didn't like the looks of either notch on the far sides, so we turned around and hiked back 3 miles to Upper Palisade Lake. The last day we hiked 2800' down into LeConte Canyon and 4000' up to Bishop Pass, down 2200' to South Lake, 23 miles in 12 hours, July 9.
Summer of 1972 (1974???), solo, up from Owens Valley through Jigsaw Pass (wrong route, class 4) and camp right on the trail just over Bishop pass, through Knapsack Pass, Palisade basin, Potluck pass, base camp on lake 11,672 on Glacier Creek. climb Sill from SW (class 3), down and over Cirque pass to north, camp on Muir trail by Upper Palisade Lake, and exit through eastern notch of Southfork Pass.
  • * Baxter 13,136', Summer 1971 solo, SW slope from camp at Baxter Lake, class 2 boulder-hop, via Onion Valley, Kearsage pass, Glen Pass, Rae Lakes, Baxter Lake, and out Baxter pass. Signatures in register dating back ~40 years.
  • June 1, 2003 from the SouthEast. SPS hike led by Ron Hudson and Patty Rambert, with Susan Livingston, Paul Morash, and RJ Secor. Left Baxter Pass trailhead about 7:35 Sat. May 31, and arrived at camp about 3:50 pm at 10180', UTM Zone 11S Easting 0380073 Northing 4079067 , WGS84 . Awoke 4:30 am Sun. June 1, hiking by 5am, summit about 10:20 am, back to camp about 11:40(?), finished about 6pm at trailhead. It was a tough hike, with trail only about the 1st kilometer followed by rough terrain, bushwacking, stream xings, boulder hopping, etc., all the way to camp. See pictures at http://community.webshots.com/user/langenbacher. See my Mt. Baxter page on SummitPost at http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/151657/mount-baxter.html

  • Peak 4404 on Condor quad - about 1/2 mi. west of Clear Creek Overlook (George's Gap) climbed from power line pass on east after locking bike to power tower, about 1990
  • ++ Wheeler Peak, Nevada 13,063 ft. in Great Basin N.P., formerly Leheman caves national monument. It's 82 ft. short of beating Boundary Peak for the hihgest point in Nevada, but Wheeler is much more worthwhile to climb than Boundary. Climbed with Deb, mid Sept., 1994. We climbed from 10,000 ft. through gorgeous golden aspen - it was "snowing" yellow leaves. Very windy, making it quite chilly. Sunny, but hazy due to the impending snowstorm later that night. This peak should have a commanding view of the Great Basin on a clear day. Interesting/mysterious old building foundation on top. According to by Robert S. Waite's 1974 Ph.D. dissertation, it was in 1881 that the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey began work in the Great Basin on its transcontinental triangulation and reconnaissance survey work west of the 100th Meridian and along the 39th Parallel. High mountains such as Ibapah Peak, Mt. Nebo and Mt. Belknap in Utah; and Arc Dome, Troy Peak and Wheeler Peak in Nevada, were selected as working field stations. Part of the program was to set up and experiment with a mirrored signaling device called a heliograph. Unfortunately we didn't see any Bristlecones. For more info on this neat place, see http://www.nps.gov/grba/
  • Peak 4253 4-23-95 with Deb. On Condor quad, about .6 west of Peak 4404 above. (west of power line pass, about .6 north of Hwy 2 ).
  • * Sawtooth Peak 12,343' with Deb and Fritz, 7-28-96. near Mineral King, Sequoia N.P., ~ 13.6 miles r.t. 4500 ft. elevation gain parked at Timber gap / Sawtooth pass trail head ~8am. from a little past Monarch lake. Fritz and Deb went straight up sand to the pass, while I went further north up the main trail. 5 hours up (8am-1pm), 4 hours down. Fire a few miles north caused haze which gradually obscured the nice view of Cirque, Langley, Muir, Whitney, Russell, but Mt. Kaweah still visible all day. Coming back I went about 100' too low and had to climb back up to the pass. Deb tried to go east down to Columbine? lake from sawtooth pass, but chickened out and waited ~2 hours at the pass for me and Fritz to bag the peak. The route from the pass to the peak was a nice scramble. The very summit rock was too scary for us to stand on, so we just put our hands on top of it. Couldn't find register.
  • Mt. Shasta with Fritz, 9-1-96. 14,162' . Bunny Flats (6900') to Horse Camp (7880') and camp at 8600'. We left about 6 am, went up the left route at the "heart" and up Misery Hill. At the top of the hill (13800') we found a well worn trail leading across the flat summit area's snow field, and then about 200' climb up the final summit. There was a hot, stinky sulfur spring area (13920') right below the summit, and a couple of tent sites, unoccupied. It was probably about 2 pm by now. We went down the narrow little chimney on the 1st sawtooth, slid down a snow chute, and hiked the rest of the way to our camp from Lake Helen without any surprises, by 7pm. We had quite a bit of unused food, water, and unused equipment left-over from the hike - we could have handled much rougher weather and could have survived a night up there. We decided to break camp and hike out.

  • 3 T's Loop Hike. 8-18-96 - Leave Icehouse Cnyn. trail head (exactly 5000') about 11:50am. ~3.5 miles to Icehouse saddle, less than 7600', lunch, up to Timber, 8303', down to timber/telegraph gap, 7700', up to Telegraph, 8985', down to timber/thunder gap, 8220', up to thunder, 8587', about 4pm. Down to Baldy Notch, 7802', 5.5 mi. + peak side trips, from Icehouse Saddle, down dirt road (with ~ .5 mile/200' erroneous descent down canyon to east of correct route) to highway at 6150', down paved road to icehouse canyon turnoff, ~4960', and back up to Trooper at trail head about 7:40pm. Probably about 14-15 miles total, and elevation gain (w/o erroneous descent) (8303-5000)+(8985-7700)+(8587-8220)+40=4995' gross, 8985-4960=4025 net elevation gain
  • Pine Mountain #1 9,648' 5-18-02 near Wrightwood, with Sierra Club 5 guys
  • Dawson Peak 9,575' 5-18-02 with Sierra Club 5 guys. Descent from Dawson to car at 6290' on Acorn Drive in Wrightwood, was 5.59 miles, moving 2 hours 29 min, nach my GPS. 3300' net elevation gain + 1500' additional climbing due to 2 saddles = 4800' overal climbing. True hiking distance round trip was more like 10.5 miles.
  • * Black Mountain (South) , 13,291' 6-2-02. Sierra Club hike led by Patty Rambert, assisted by RJ Secor, with David H., Susan L., and Brian. Starting Saturday, June 1, shortly after 7 am with clear skies, we were attempting Baxter by the Southeast slope. After bushwacking about 1/3 mile up between the 2 forks of Oak Creek, two other people signed out, leaving 6 of us. After another 1/3 mile we couldn't see a good route, and most people didn't like it, so we traversed south to Baxter Pass trail and climbed to 10750' near the drainage from the Black/Diamond basin, for camp. It rained on us a few times on the way up, and we had a lot of pellet snow/hail during happy hour at camp.
Awoke at 5 am to 27 degress F. Leaving about 6:15 am Sunday, under clear skies, we ascended south and west to the basin at 11,300' and climbed some class 3 rock on the southeast to avoid steep stuff on the drainage from Black. Ascended a rocky ramp to a notch about 1200 ft. west of Black and then up the north side of the ridge with crampons and ice axes, by about 10:15 AM. It was fairly warm and the view was gorgeous, with snow , frozen lakes, and peaks from Whitney to Darwin clearly in view. Everyone but I descended on steep snow from about 900' west of the peak, but I thought the snow was too hard and descended the way we went up and waited for them below. They had fun glisading and said it was pretty soft after all. Brian signed out to go do Diamond. We headed straight down the drainage to the cliffs and went right a couple hundred feet to a steep snow chute. The snow was quite soft so I walked down far enough to get to where the runout was safe (to the bottom of the basin at 11,300' and slid fast and practiced self-arrest a little and had lots of fun. We could see Brian approaching the steep snow chutes southeast of Diamond.
The rest of the descent to the cars by 5-6 pm was pleasant (some shade from clouds) but uneventful. Saw no bears, no sheep, only 2 other hikers and beautiful scenery.
  • * Lone Pine Peak , 12943' 9-29-02. With Jeff H. and Paul M., after aborted club trip to Mallory/Irvine. At about 2pm Friday John D. and I started from the "Meysan Lakes Trail Parking"to the 1st sign at about 3340 meters altitude pointing to a lake, and camped at UTM 891468, near the "round" lake, at 7pm. John and I intended to climb Lone Pine Peak Saturday, but it started raining Friday night and snowing Saturday morning - the temperature was near freezing in the AM. We broke camp and waited at the trail to see if the other club members would show up. We got a 2nd hand weather report that it would be clearing on Sunday, but the snowfall increased. The club arrived about noon and decided to camp at UTM 891469, above the round lake. At 2pm Jeff and I hiked up to overlook Meysan lake, but it was snowing and cloudy and we usually couldn't see much. Then we hike up to a pass at UTM 881471, alt. 3700 M +, which had a ducked trail, and still couldn't see much of anything. We mistook a hiker below us for Paul, who had attempted to climb LeConte. This hiker later told others he had gotten lost in the fog for a while and was descending the wrong side of the ridge for a while. Paul had left his pack at Meysan Lake and couldn't see well enough to try LeConte so he turned and climbed Mallory, and descended on the Irvine route to avoid the snowy chute he went up, but found the new route down just as bad. Paul got into camp about 5:30-6pm. It stopped snowing at sunset. We woke Sunday to 25 degrees with an inch of snow on the ground. Most people packed up and left, but Jeff, Paul and I headed out, at about 8:15 am, to see if it was safe to climb Lone Pine. The chute, starting at UTM 892464, 3360 M, got up to about 40 degrees, but was mostly sand and smaller rock, with virtually no ice. The snow seemed to help climb in the sand. at about 3720 M we finally got out of the chute and up to the plateau at about 3700 M. I made the mistake of heading right up the ridge, but this involved a lot of boulder hopping and a few false summits. We made the peak at about 10:45, with still air, warm sun, and beautiful views of Owens Valley, Mt. Whitney, and White Mountain (75 miles North), but scattered clouds blocking parts of the view. About 11:15 we descended more directly South to the plateau (instead of SW down the ridge) and hiked almost 1/2 mile westerly on flatter ground before descending to the chute, and down the chute. Down the chute was fast in the sand, sliding with each step. I followed a water course on the east side of the moraine to avoid the boulder hopping route That I had chosen on the west side of it on the way up. Then we broke camp and got to our cars about 3pm.

  • * Birch Mountain 13,602', 4146m, 10-27-02 with Paul Morash, NW Slope. Camped at 1500 meters near Lone Pine, Friday night. Started 10:15 am Saturday at 2020 meters with 32 lb. pack (Paul had 42 lb, with tent). Arrived Birch Lake 3 pm sharp, 3292 meters. Camped about 60 meters north from the lake outlet. It snowed about 1/2 inch Saturday night. We left camp 6:45 am Sunday with slippery footing (especially on glacier ice). We went along the east side of the moraine south of Birch lake for about half a mile to a big chute heading ESE toward the summit, but I preferred to go up the ridge just to the right (west) of the chute to avoid steep hard ice at the bottom and an uncertain looking route up the chute. Half-way up, we got into a shallow chute to the right. Paul disliked this route because it was all boulders and talus without scree or sand. Snow made our footing uncertain. We summited about noon. Cold but calm air on the summit was nice, as were views of The Thumb, Palisades, Split Mtn., Mt. Bolton Brown, etc., with clouds intermittently blocking some of the view. I would have enjoyed it more if I wasn't so tired, my camera was working properly, and there were less clouds. Slow going down, too. We descended by chute immediately west from the peak - a little east of where we went up. I didn't like this route at the top or bottom of the chute as it was steep loose scree at the top and sloping glacier ice to cross at the bottom. Paul went easily straight down well ahead of me and crossed the ice slowly, while I lagged behind and traversed left a little, to avoid some steep scree and the glacier ice. The occasional scree that was not too steep here was nicer than descending over 100% talus. We broke camp in mid afternoon and hiked the last 2 miles in the dark, by headlight. We didn't come close to any trees the whole way up or down. A fire had burned everthing from where we parked, all the way up to 3000+ meters, except around a couple of springs. The trail was extremely sandy and dusty - easy on the feet going down. We got back to Paul's place about midnight. My legs were very sore Monday and Tuesday. See my pictures and info at Summitpost.com My little collection of GPS Waypoints for the Birch Lake area is available in 4 different formats. Some of the waypoints were collected on the trip, and some were calculated before or afterwards from a map, so I think they are accurate but there is a possibility of error.
BirchCreek.mps is in Garmin MapSource format (NOT an mpeg file - right click and "save target as..." or "save link target as...")
BirchCreekWaypoints.loc is in EasyGPS format (left click if you have EasyGPS installed, or right click and "save target as..." or "save link target as..." and download EasyGPS from EasyGPS link near bottom of this page)
BirchWaypointPluscommadelim.txt is a comma-delimited text file produced by Waypoint Plus
BirchWaypointsMapsource.txt is a tab-delimted text file produced by MapSource
The 2 text files are sort of human readable, if you know what you're looking at, or maybe if you paste them into Excel ???
  • *Mt. Keith 13,976', 4260m, June 13, 2004 - with John, Patty, Susan, and Judy.
  • **Junction Peak 13,888', 4233m, July 24, 2004 - with Bill, Bob, Paul, and Susan. From camp at Shepherd pass to lake 3806m to the U notch was easy, then difficult route finding to the summit. Then on to Tyndall in the afternoon.
  • *Mt Tyndall 14,018', 4273m, July 24, 2004 - with Bill, Bob, Paul, and Susan. After climbing Junction in the morning. Up by way of the "class 2" NW slope and west ridge, down on the class 3 North Rib.
  • ***Matterhorn Peak 12,279', 3743m, I left home in Orange County at 4:30 am Saturday to beat the traffic, and got to Bridgeport 6 hours later. After a visit to the trailhead, and then a 30 minute tour of the town on foot, I lazed around my motel room to make up for 2 nights lack of proper sleep, and to aclimatize at 6500 ft.. Amit Bedajna's trip started Sunday morning about 7 am from the west end of Twin Lakes. We summited about noon, with Amit, Ted Lenzie, Janet Brewster, and Alan Brown.

This is an SPS "Emblem" peak with a beautiful view from the summit. It was sunny, with no snow, but a little bit chilly and windy on top. This was fine dayhike for a strong party. Car to Car in 9 hours flat with only about 4 rest stops. Daryn Dodge started with us, but his goal was Whorl, and he split off from us alone, at Horse Creek pass. I hope he made it OK.

At Mono Village, parking is free for dayhikers, but you have to pay if you're staying overnight, or you car will be towed away. Hike through the S.E. corner of the campground past a couple of campsites (RV sites) before heading across the streams on a couple of bridges. Amit had been this way before, and knew how to stay to the right for the "false pass" just inside the Hoover Wilderness after our 1st short break (see http://171.64.169.61/.mh/east_sierra_091302_091602/html/110-1073_IMG_web.html and http://www.tahoebackcountry.net/features/matterwhorl/matterwhorl2.htm ). Here, there are multiple use trails. About halfway up this hill, everyone went up the middle, but I went right, up a well worn set of little switchbacks, but I ended up too far right at the top, and had to cross back to the left over boulders, to get back with the group.

After resting just before the ridge, we crossed into Tuolumne County (Spiller Creek Drainage) a little west and above the low point of Horse Creek Pass, and on the return, we crossed back over into Mono County even a little higher up the ridge.

The final SE slope has many use trails. Avoid going up the leftmost way in steep , loose sand and scree. You can go up the right on rock and firmer scree, or up the middle through vegetation and some sand, and just to the right of a little gendarme in the upper middle part of the slope. Near the top, just above the gendarme, go left a couple hundred feet to a little notch with a view to the south. Don't go down through the notch, but go up a little to the right toward the summit, up steep solid rock about 60-100 ft. to the the nearest part of the summit ridge. Then a couple hundred feet easy scramble up the ridge to the rocky summit. If this route description doesn't make much sense, don't worry, it's not hard to find the way. I came down the steepest, sandiest scree, just south of the little gendarme for several hundred feet before going left (north) to parallel the watershed ridge. We took one more break in a warm sunny meadow before crossing the ridge back out of Yosemite National Park, and it was almost nonstop back to the cars. A quick dinner in Bridgeport with the happy, successful climbing party, and then I was on my way home to Fullerton by midnight.
  • Rosa Point 5,000'+, Sat. Feb. 26, 2005 - with 14 DPS'ers. From San Diego County Road S22 (Borrego-Salton Seaway) on the south and up Palo Verde Canyon. Up via DPS rout "B" (SW ridge, not on the HPS map) and down route "A" (south ridge, use trail, same as HPS "route 1"). It was a little hazy that day, but we saw the Salton Sea to the east, and we didn't get rained on like some people did on Friday. Nice early desert flowers, very green due to recent rains. This was a good warm-up for Indianhead the next day. See pictures at Webshots in my Rosa & Indianhead Feb 26-27 2005 folder.
  • Indianhead 3,960+, Sun. Feb. 27, 2005 - with 6 DPS'ers. From Anza Borrego Park HQ, up Palm Canyon and north on a ridge to the 1st saddle on the W ridge, to the summit, then down a gully to the SE. Not the clearest and sunniest of days, but we had an impressive view of Borrego Valley the east, and we saw a small Borrego herd. Nice flowers with the exceptionaly abundant rains this year. It actually seemed more challenging that Rosa Point, the day before. See pictures at Webshots in my Rosa & Indianhead Feb 26-27 2005 folder.
  • *Mount Morgan (North)13,005 feet (3,964 meters), June 11, 2005. From lake 9852 (2nd Hilton Lake ???). With Larry, Barbee , Ted , Derrick , Greg , David , and Garen. We started at Hilton Lakes Trailhead , then set up camp at the lake. Some crappy x-country until we got above the timber line, then mostly good snow. The cannister for the register was totally empty when I found it - I even looked on the south summit - no register book to be found. Fortunately Derrick had a fresh one to donate to the summit. We tried to descend directly to Davis lake but got hung up on cliffs and had to go back up and take our original route down. Got back to camp well after dark. It was a beautiful weather, but the 14 hour day was a bit much. We stayed up late for a belated 'happy hour', but we were too pooped to climb all the way Stanford the next day. Mountains bring Harry an ineffable joy. He proposed to his 1st wife on San Gorgonio mountain, and proposed to his his 2nd wife on Mt. Wilson. Unfortunately neither of them liked mountains so much. But after Harry met Debbie Sept. 23, 1989 on Mt. Islip, and climbed Mt. Wilson with her the next day, he knew it was the right thing to do when he married her on Mt. Wilson, May 14, 1991.
