July 28,29,30 My brother Fritz and I attempted Mt Goddard. I made it, but it was harder than we thought and Fritz waited for me for 5 hours at Wanda Pass while I Wanda'ed up to the summit.

The scenery was truly beautiful. Thanks to the weather and the "autostitch" program I got some nice pictures (274 of them) and panoramas. I'm still working on the pictures and trip report, but some of the pix and pano's are up on Webshots at http://community.webshots.com/album/552775663SpxVXb or http://community.webshots.com/user/langenbacher .

We made Lamarck Col in 4.2 hours from the car, but slowed down (and got off route) after that. It was sad to pass by Mt. Mendel, but Darwin Canyon was the Jewel of the trip. There are a lot more gems in this area, but the rest of the trip we were pushing pretty hard to get to Goddard.

The 2nd day we had a rainbow in the morning, but only a few minutes rain on us. We tried to avoid wading Evolution Creek, but only added time and trouble before we took our boots off to cross above Sapphire Lake. It was easy enough to get to Wanda Pass, but traveling alone after that, my route became convoluted. I tried to follow the ridge as suggested by Secor, Voge, and Roper, but opted for a safer route with another 500 feet of loss and gain. The summit was very nice (except for the mosquitoes!) but I stayed only long enough to take snapshots and a 360 panorama, and to add a pencil and 13" x 19" piece of paper (my map) to the empty register container - 15 minutes. I was taking too long and feared my brother would think I was overdue. I  dropped down 1600 ft. before ascending 700 ft., following snow fields, to where I could yell across to Fritz, who had just started to come look for me, 5 minutes earlier.

I felt exhausted on the way back, but I was glad to have bagged an Emblem Peak, and after a refreshing wade in the creek again, I slept much better than the 1st night. The 3rd day we actually encountered frozen snow above 11000 ft., early in Darwin Canyon, after a colder night. The rain held off untill we were a hundred yards from my car at 2:30 pm. We had plenty of time for showers in Big Pine and an early dinner at the "Whitney" in Lone Pine.

Only two more emblem peaks to get an SPS emblem (after climbing the 1st one 38 years ago). Ritter is next - August 27 ! Brewer in September ?
